Whenever you bring a new puppy into your home, there is a transitional period for the puppy to adapt to the new surroundings.  Toy Poodles are quick learners, so they will easily catch on to your daily routine and expectations.

At Stellar Toy Poodles, we feed our toy poodle puppies Nutro Natural Choice for Puppies.  We recommend keeping the poodle on this food for several days in order to prevent upsetting the toy poodle’s stomach during the transitional period in your home.  If you wish, you can begin to mix the food of your choice  in with the Nutro for 3-5 days to avoid digestion difficulties during the change to your preferred brand of food.  Eukanuba, Iams, Eagle, Nutro Max, and Science Diet all make wonderful puppy foods.  Toy Poodles should be given a food with smaller morsels in order for chewing not to pose a challenge.  You should consult with your veterinarian to find the right food for you and your puppy.  As your puppy matures, you may want to change to a different brand of adult dog food.  Again, your veterinarian is a great resource for advice.

Toy Poodle puppies can develop low blood sugar, if not feed at least two-three times daily.  We advise you to maintain a schedule of feeding, which will also enable the housetraining process to be easier.  Please refrain from feeding any puppy table scraps or “human food.”  It’s tempting, but it is not in a puppy’s best interest.

It is imperative to maintain regular visits to veterinarian.  Generally, when our toy poodles go to their new homes, they have received their first two or three rounds of puppy shots from our veterinarian.  Depending on your veterinarian, the puppy may require one or two more rounds of puppy shots.  There are different schools of thought on vaccination procedures.  Some veterinarians prefer a more aggressive approach to a vaccination schedule; others administer a more moderate schedule.  As a dog owner, it is your job to locate a vet that you trust and whose practices suit you and your new toy poodle.  If you have not had a regular veterinarian in the past, please do some research to find the perfect match for you.

Prior to bringing your toy poodle home, you should also have a crate or a “house” for your poodle.  It is a good idea to line the crate with towels or some sort of bedding for the puppy to have comfort in his or her “house.”  We have found that crate training is the most effective means of housetraining a puppy.

If you already have other dogs in your home, the addition of a new puppy may stir a little commotion at first; however, toy poodles do well living in a multi-dog household.  Be careful with larger dogs; they must know that this new puppy may not be ready for rowdy playing.  Within several days, you will notice a bond beginning to develop; the excitement will die down, and normal behavior will return.  Unfortunately, there are certain breeds of dogs, which are by nature overly aggressive and sometimes violent to other dogs.  You know your dogs better than anyone else, so you make the decision, which will enhance your home and family and be in the best interest of the new puppy.

Spaying and neutering are key obligations to being a responsible dog owner.  Neutering a male dog at the appropriate age prevents many behavior problems, including marking territory.  Furthermore, it is in the best interest of your pet’s health that you spay or neuter.  Generally, veterinarians will perform the procedure when the puppy reaches 6-9 months of age.

Toy Poodles are non-shedding dogs.  They also do not have as many problems with odor as other breeds.  You may wish to have your poodle professionally groomed on a regular basis, fitting to your schedule.  Brushing weekly helps in eliminating matting of hair, which can be a problem, as it is with any dog without short hair.  Many poodle owners perform their own grooming.  As we discussed in other sections, the style and length of your poodle’s hair is your choice.

Toy Poodles are easy dogs to raise and love.  They desire to please you and delight in your approval and praises.  They are the perfect lap dogs, but they also love to play and exercise.  Therefore, they are a great mix of all the qualities desired in a canine pet!
