“Teacup” Poodles and “Tiny Toy” Poodles?

Are you a “Teacup” Poodle Breeder?

Text Box: It has become quite popular to refer to the more petite Toy Poodles as “Teacup” Poodles or “Tiny Toy” Poodles. As stated on our main page, “Teacups” and “Tiny Toys” do not exist as independent breeds of poodles. These terms are commonly used to identify the variation of sizes in the Toy Poodle breed. AKC does not recognize these distinctions and registers them as Toy Poodles.

At Stellar Toy Poodles, our puppies generally range between 2.5 to 6 pounds at maturity. Our main intent in breeding is NOT to produce the smallest puppy possible. Instead, our priority is diligently focusing upon health and temperament.

Unfortunately, many unscrupulous breeders sacrifice the health of their adults and puppies in order to decrease the size of their puppies. Certain breeders will inbreed their smallest dogs to increase their chances of producing “Teacups.” Improper and repetitive inbreeding can lead to increased occurrences of genetic deformities in the future offspring. We do not practice this method, since as stated above, our main intention in breeding is good health and favorable temperament.

The AKC standard for the Toy Poodle states that they should be 10 inches or under at the highest point on the shoulders. When evaluating our Toy Poodle puppies, we chart their weight and height each week. We do estimate their expected weight and height at maturity based on their current measurements for their age. Also, we consider the sizes of the parents, as another element in our estimation. It is impossible, however, to guarantee the adult size of a puppy. We provide the most honest and accurate estimation possible, but sometimes puppies will surprise you and hit unexpected growth spurts. Also, on occasion puppies will not continue to grow at the projected rate and mature to be smaller than their estimate.
